#52FilmsByWomen: GIRLHOOD

19/52 GIRLHOOD.

This week’s film, directed by Celine Sciamma, is truly stunning and completely absorbing from start to finish. It’s a naturalistic look at an African-French teenager finding herself in the projects outside Paris. Sciamma’s film has been compared to the New Wave in its tone and absolute lack of artifice and I think the comparison is right on. There’s no “acting” happening at all from anyone in the cast–just a deeply truthful and nuanced look into these young lives.

I love how Sciamma divides into the film into three or four major chapters using music, wardrobe and blackouts. The film can’t help but speak to race and poverty but, at its core, it’s about female friendship and the feminine point-of-view.

Sciamma writes and designs costumes in addition to directing. Her films have won and been nominated for multiple prestigious awards and she’s known for exploring female identity and sexual equality in her work. I need to go watch her other films after seeing this one; it was breathtaking.
