#52FilmsByWomen: OBSELIDIA & BLEEDING HEART

ObselidiaBleeding Heart

February 1, 2016. 2/52 OBSELIDIA. 3/52 BLEEDING HEART. This week’s films by a female director were from indie writer/director Diane Bell. Diane has a wonderful reputation as a person who makes her films happen on her terms and then teaches other filmmakers to do the same. Together with her producer husband, Chris Byrne, she runs Rebel Heart Film Workshops around the country; the filmmaking model they teach is what I’m going to follow to make my own up-coming feature. Diane’s films are beautifully written and directed. She thoughtfully and sensitively approaches the topics that fill all of us with dread underneath our everyday lives–the rapid destruction of our planet, the plight of young women trapped in the sex industry, the feeling of helplessness in the face of terrorism–and yet her movies are filled with hope, optimism and a sense of personal power. Her films are quietly paced but they both stayed with me after I saw them. Please seek out her work!
